Length of new cycling Infrastructure in West Sussex
Following the adoption of the West Sussex Walking and
Cycling Strategy 2016-2026 the County Council set an initial target to install
28.71 km of new cycleable infrastructure over the 4-year period 01/04/18 to
31/03/22. Good progress meant that we were able to install over 26km (90% of
the original target) by the end of Year 3 and so, as part of the County
Council’s Covid-19 Reset Plan, a new target will come in to effect from
01/04/21. The new target is to provide a further 30.0 km of new infrastructure
over the 4-year period 01/04/21 to 31/03/25. The new target reflects the
Council’s ambition to further improve on previous delivery and the government’s
aspirations in relation to the provision of high-quality cycling infrastructure
as set out in its ‘Gear Change’ document and Local Traffic Note 1/20. It
therefore follows that, whilst the government has committed to make significant
funding available to local authorities for high quality active travel
improvements over the lifetime of this parliament, the associated costs will
determine the amount of new infrastructure that can be provided.
