We believe passionately that the health check is a great starting point to people helping themselves to live in good health for longer. We want to encourage more people to take up their free health check, so are you up for the challenge in 2017/18? It’s never too late – if you were offered a health check last year and didn’t take it up – you can still have your check -go to www.westsussexwellbeing.org.uk/healthchecks and find out where you can get one near to you.

Everyone is at risk of developing heart disease, stroke, diabetes, kidney disease and some forms of dementia.

The good news is that these conditions can often be prevented - even if you have a history of them in your family.

Have your free NHS Health Check and you will be better prepared for the future and be able to take steps to maintain or improve your health.

Your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease and dementia increases with age. There are also certain things that will put you at even greater risk. These are:

  • being overweight
  • being physically inactive
  • not eating healthily
  • smoking
  • drinking too much alcohol
  • high blood pressure
  • high cholesterol

So even if you're feeling well, it's still worth having your 20-30 minute health check now to keep you healthy for the future.

Quarter 4 - March 2018
The target for the number of health checks delivered in the previous year (2016/17) was set at 14,500.
The year-end outturn for the programme at March 2017 was 10,636 (73.4% of target)
The  2016/17 target was rolled over into the first two quarters of 17/18 without refresh.  
The target for 17/18 was re-set in the first quarter to 11,167 health checks completed this was viewed as an achievable stretch target to enable the programme to rebuild from the 2016/17 outturn. The aspiration remains to work towards high quality, full roll out of the programme. Programme outturn for health checks delivered at March 2018 is 12,397 exceeding the revised 17/18 target by 1,230 (11% above target) and has recovered to 85.5% of the previous 16/17 target of 14,500.

Quarter 3 - December/January 2018

WSCC expects 30,000 people to be offered the opportunity to have their NHS health check in 2017/18 which equates to 2,500 per month. WSCC intends to deliver a minimum of 11,000 health checks across the year, of which 8,548 were delivered by Quarter 3.

The numbers of actual health checks offered and delivered from April to December are inline with the locally agreed plan. The programme is on track to achieve as planned by year end.

Quarter 2 - September/October 2017

WSCC expects 30,000 people to be offered the opportunity to have their NHS health check in 2017/18 which equates to 2,500 per month. WSCC intends to deliver a minimum of 11,000 health checks across the year, of which 5,785 were delivered by Quarter 2.

The numbers of actual health checks offered and delivered from April to September are in line with the locally agreed plan. The programme is on track to achieve as planned by year end.

Quarter 1 - June 2017

WSCC expects 30,000 people to be offered the opportunity to have their NHS health check in 2017/18 which equates to 7,500 per quarter. WSCC intends to deliver a minimum of 11,000 health checks across the year, of which 2,758 will be delivered in Quarter 1.

At the end of Quarter 1, the number of health checks offered was 9,396 - 25% above planned.

Although this is significantly higher than planned, over the course of the year the number invited will come back in line. The number of health checks delivered was 2,858, which is 3.6% above planned. The programme is on track to achieve as planned by year-end.

WSCC wants to encourage more people to take up the offer of their free health check. Health checks are widely available across the county. Most GP practices offer the service to their registered patients by invitation. Many pharmacies offer the service on the high street and community clinics are held in a variety of community venues.
