      The Better Roads Programme will see £30 million invested to improve the unclassified rural and residential road network.

      This injection of capital spending over the next two years will reduce annual maintenance costs by £1.2million per year. A highway network that is in good condition is more resilient and cheaper to maintain in the long term.       As we close year one of Better Roads Programme has clearly exceeded expectations. Figures as at 16 April indicate Better Roads has delivered over 108% of the annual programmed spend for 2014/15. Bringing forward some 10% of the schemes initially scheduled for year two of the programme has aided the acceleration in improvement to the quality of the highway network of West Sussex and an earlier realisation of the targets and objectives of Better Roads.

      Of a programme of 600 schemes, 592 have now been delivered in 14/15 at a total value of £16,346,919.02

      The aim of the Better Roads Programme is to reduce the unclassified Road Condition Index (RCI), the national benchmark, from 22% to 16%

      . In the first year we have achieved a 4% improvement working towards this target.
