      EMPLOYMENT RATE

      The employment rate is a measure of the number of residents in employment expressed as a percentage of all people aged 16-64. The source of the data is the Annual Population Survey (APS), which includes data from a sample of around 256,000 people aged 16 and over and is the largest regular national household sample survey. It is, however, subject to sampling errors particularly at the smallest geographies for which data is available - local authority geography. Whilst the data is released quarterly there is a 3 -4 month time lag in publishing the data – the latest set of data is for December 2014.

      The latest figures suggest that around 385,000 residents in West Sussex were in employment at December 2014, representing 78.5% of all residents aged 16 -64 years. There has been a slight fall over the year. However, the employment rate for the county is significantly higher than that for England (72.5) and for the South East region (75.8).

      Compared with the same period 5 years ago, at the time when the economy was beginning to show tentative signs that it was emerging from recession, the employment rate for the county has increased from 75.2 and there are 18,800 more residents in work now than 5 years ago an increase of 5.1% compared with an increase seen in England of 4.1% and 2.5% regionally.

      In terms of the spatial areas Rural West Sussex (Chichester, Horsham and Mid Sussex) has the highest employment rate at 80%. The employment rate for Coastal West Sussex (Adur, Arun, Chichester & Worthing) has increased over the year - almost entirely due to the increase in residents in work in Worthing, whilst Gatwick Diamond (Crawley, Horsham & Mid Sussex) and Rural West Sussex has seen a fall in the employment rate.

      There is substantial variation across each of the districts within West Sussex. Arun district has the highest employment rate at 82.1 and Worthing the lowest at 73.1 though the figures at local authority level are subject to greater sampling error.
